Carol Vorderman
Guest Director of The Times Cheltenham Science Festival 2009

Carol Vorderman

Why did you decide to be Guest Director of the festival?
A: The Cheltenham Science Festival is fantastic. It’s quite an intimate science festival and it’s such a nice place to come to in all ways. I think it’s wonderful and this year I’m very proud to be Guest Director! What I love about the Cheltenham Science Festival is its purpose is to communicate science to the general public — be they children, or schools, or families. It is terribly important, even if you haven’t received a formal education in science that you begin to understand some of the issues.

Standing ovation for science — Mark Lythgoe’s festival highlight

Mark Lythgoe

Mark Lythgoe, Co-director of The Times Cheltenham Science Festival, talked to Sue Harris about one of his festival highlights – Good Bugs, Bad Bugs by Mike Wilson, Professor of Microbiology at UCL.

I went to the most amazing talk I have been to in the last 2 years. The audience must have clapped for about 2 to 3 minutes continuously afterwards. I have never, ever felt that kind of electricity — when every single person in the audience just connected together, knowing that they had experienced a really special moment in their lives. Every single one of us would have walked out of that lecture theatre and looked at themselves and the world completely differently because of what I heard. It was one of the most unique experiences I have ever had.

Exhausted volunteers Caroline Grainger and Henry Lau prepare to clear up the Channel 4 Experitent Venue at the end of The Times Cheltenham Science Festival

The Times Cheltenham Science Festival drew to a close on Sunday in the same way that it had begun — with a bang. This time, it was the bang of drums as Darrin Mooney, drummer from successful rock band Primal Scream, pounded his way to exhaustion in the Pillar Room.

The purpose was to demonstrate changes in heart rate and oxygen uptake during a live performance. Steve Draper and Marcus Smith from the Clem Burke Drumming Project have been conducting research to find out whether drumming could provide real physical and mental health benefits.

Mendelssohn, the Nazis and me…

Mendelssohn

Sheila Hayman, the composer’s great-great-great-great niece writes in The Times about her talented ancestor, and the way his Jewish heritage was used in the 1930s to obliterate his name from Austro-German musical life.

The 2009 HSBC Cheltenham Music Festival features a huge range of Mendelssohn’s glorious music in the bicentenary year of his birth — from Songs without Words for solo piano to the Violin Concerto performed by Vilde Frang, conductor Edward Gardner and the Halle. You can hear a piano trio, a piano quartet, two string quartets (one and two), a string quintet, the string octet, a selection of songs from mezzo Christianne Stotijn and Julius Drake, Hear My Prayer from Gloucester Cathedral Choir and two orchestral overtures (one and two).

Visitors to the festival may be here for an entertaining day out and to take part in some of the many interactive activities.
