2009 NESTA Famelab showreels now online!

Nesta FameLab is our exhilarating national competition to find new voices of science and engineering.

The showreels of all the NESTA FameLab 2009 finalists are now available to view on our YouTube Channel youtube.com/famelab. Here you can watch our ten fabulous finalists in action with clips of their regional auditions, their presentations in the UK final and interviews giving the story of their journey through the competition. If you want to find out more about the FameLabbers or contact them then visit the Hall of FameLab.

Whilst you’re enjoying yourself on the NESTA FameLab YouTube channel you can also watch footage from this year’s regional heats and UK final, Tom Whyntie’s winning presentation, 2009’s video auditions and all the videos from previous years of the competition.

NESTA FameLab 2009 — results of the UK Final

At 4:30 PM 5th June, the 10 NESTA FameLab finalists took to the stage in front of a huge audience and judges Kathy Sykes, Mark Lythgoe, Leanne Klein and Mark Henderson in the Main Arena at the Cheltenham Science Festival. In the two hours that followed, the audience were treated to a range of captivating, fascinating and humorous talks that took them from malaria to autism, hip replacements to pheromones via a spot of quantum physics, and, for the first time in the history of FameLab, a three minute rhyming poem about bacteria and food poisoning! The atmosphere was tense as the judges stepped out to make their decision and the audience votes were counted.

It was a day of forward thinking at The Times Cheltenham Science Festival on Friday.

Being World Environment Day, it was appropriate that there were a number of events about our changing environment. Jonathon Porritt talked to Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Joan Ruddock, about whose responsibility it really is to tackle climate change.

NESTA FameLab 2009 launched

We are excited to announce that after three hugely successful competitions in 2005, 2006 & 2007 NESTA FameLab is back for 2009! The competition opens today with the launching of our new website — famelab.org.

FameLab is a competition to find the country’s best communicators actively working in science. We are looking for scientists, mathematicians and engineers with a passion for their subject and the talent to communicate it to the public.

FameLab is offering a huge prize pool of £10,000 for the winner and £5,000 for the runner up! Finalists also receive professional training in communication and opportunities to launch their science communication careers. Full details on how to enter the competition and entry criteria are on our website.

If you want to see the FameLab contestants in action and sample the best in new science communication then visit our website to find out where your nearest Regional Final is and make sure that you don’t miss the UK and International FameLab Finals at the Cheltenham Science Festival.
