Wednesday is the first day of The Times Cheltenham Science Festival and this year’s festival promises to be the biggest and the best yet.

On Tuesday afternoon, stands were built, marquees went up, lights were tested and the numerous staff and volunteers were running around like crazy! There is certainly a real buzz of excitement here at the Town Hall and with more venues and more live events than ever before there is much to be excited about.

Terms and conditions

All those joining the Membership Scheme between 8–13 June will be entered into the draw to win the collection of science books
One entry will be made per new membership
Books must be collected from Cheltenham Festivals’ offices in Bath Road, Cheltenham within 30 days of the prize notification. Arrangements for the collection must be made by the winner: Cheltenham Festivals are unable to deliver or pay for delivery of the prize.
The winner will be notified by email within 48 hours of the end of the competition. Confirmation must be made by the winner within 48 hours.
No cash alternative will be given. The decision of Cheltenham Festivals is final.

Breaking news — electric Mini, Mars rover and a steam car!

Electric Mini: On Saturday and Sunday we will be joined by examples of next generation electric vehicles. Supported by the Technology Strategy Board and its Ultra Low Carbon Vehicle programme manufacturers will be giving a glimpse of what will soon be in the show room, including the all electric Mini which is yet to go on sale in Europe — be one of the first to see this innovative vehicle.

The cars will be in Imperial Gardens close to the EDF Energy Arena.

Mars rover: Also at the weekend in Imperial Gardens will be the EADS-Astrium exo-Mars Rover called Bridget driving on a simulated Mars Landscape. The next time you will see a vehicle like this it will be millions of miles away on the surface of Mars!

British Steam Car: The rover will be joined by a more down to Earth vehicle: the world record holding British Steam Car. This fabulous tribute to British engineering excellence broke the world land speed record for a steam driven car last year and is making one of its first public appearances since its triumphant return.

Exhibition — Cheltenham Open Studios at the Science Festival

Cheltenham Open Studios are exhibiting at The Times Cheltenham Science Festival.

Members of the studios have created a series of works around the festival theme of decadence. Catch up with the free exhibition at the Town Hall and in the Waterstone bookshop tent. The work will be on show throughout the festival from 9–13 June. Put it on your list of things to do at the Science Festival this year!
